Hi Mary,

I want to run my first mud race this summer, but I don't run. At all. What should I do to prepare?

Hey! So, congrats on releasing your inner warrior and running your first mud race! Whoop! Whoop! (Mandatory warrior cry.) Here's what I would recommend:

1. Get yourself on a Couch to 5K running program NOW. You'll be better prepared for a mud race if you start, well, running. This program can take any non-runner and prepare them (gently) for a 5K.

2. Register for an easy, fun mud race that's about a 5K distance (3.1 miles). I think the Warrior Dash is a great starter race; it's marketed toward the everyman racer and the obstacles are easy and designed for someone to manage them without help.

Other races like the Tough Mudder, the Spartan Beast or the Primal Mud Run really do require teamwork, strength and endurance...the walls are big (some 12 feet tall!), the water is cold, the obstacles are more unforgiving and the injury-risk increases.

3. Add some strength training and plyometrics to your workout. This will help you recover quickly after the obstacles and jump back into your running pace.

4. Run OUTSIDE. You'll better acclimate your body to the outdoor elements if you train outside.

5. Grow some balls!!!! Yep. Fearlessness and a positive attitude are a must have for any mud race. There's nothing worse than hesitation on the course.

Good luck and enjoy your first muddy run! Let me know how it goes...
